Important Christmas Fine Art Auction: Haute Epoque, Jewels and Colonial Treasures
Lot 299:
Its origin is in an engraving by Dürer from the 15th century called “Christ Pensioroso”, in relation to the mysticism that flourished in the Germanic environment during the 14th century. Furthermore, this clear influence is combined with the pagan aspect that connects with the feeling of melancholy, linked to one of the classic temperaments. If this is taken to theological interpretation, the melancholy that Jesus expresses at this moment is interpreted by the moment between his first martyrdom and the future Crucifixion.
