Oil on canvas, canvas measures: 102 x 81 cm. Framed measurements: 125 x 106 cm. Bartolomeo Carducci or Carduccio, Spanishized: Bartolomé Carducho (Florence, c. 1560-El Pardo, November 14, 1608), Italian painter who did much of his work in Spain. In his hometown he was a disciple of Bartolomeo Ammanati, working in stucco. From there he went to Rome to later work under Federico Zuccaro in the dome of the Florence Cathedral. In 1585 he moved to Spain together with Zuccaro and his brother Vicente Carducho to work on the frescoes in the Monastery of El Escorial, where they were officially received on January 20, 1586. There they made the openings of the main altarpiece: Christ with the cross on the slopes, The scourging, Descent of the Holy Spirit, Assumption of the Virgin, Resurrection of the Lord. In 1598 he was appointed chamber painter to Felipe III and painted in the parish of San Andrés in Valladolid, reaping the friendship of the sculptor Pompeyo Leoni and the painter Pantoja de la Cruz. He painted the notable Retables of San Diego de Valladolid, 1604-1606, which are on display at the Museo Nacional Colegio de San Gregorio, in that city. His last work (which he could not finish) was a set of frescoes in the Palacio del Pardo, which he undertook after the building suffered a fire in 1604. His brother Vincenzo would succeed him as Philip’s chamber painter III. Origin: important private Spanish collection.
