Oil on canvas, measures: 84 x 63 cm, framed measures: 95 x 63 cm. Born in Bohemia in 1728, his name is due to two painters who were a source of inspiration for his father and would later be for him: Antonio Allegri (nicknamed Correggio) and Rafael Sanzio. His training stage was not only oriented towards techniques but also towards the theory of art, which was in its beginnings as a science, championed by Johann Joachim Winckelmann, of whom he was an outstanding student and friend. He was trained in Dresden under the direction of his father, Ismael Mengs, who was an official court painter, who in addition to being a painter was a great draughtsman and specialist in miniatures and enamels. Anton Raphael traveled to Rome between 1741 and 1744 in order to complete his artistic education. There the young Mengs worked under the direction of Marco Benefial and studied especially the ancient sculpture of the Belvedere, Raphael and classical painting from the 17th century. Few samples of that stage are conserved. One of them is The Arts Mourn Raphael, which is kept in the British Museum in London, inspired by a work by Carlo Maratta.
