Italian painter, draftsman, animator and set designer born in Genoa. Luzatti was born on June 3, 1921, into a Genoese family of Jewish origin. Due to the racial laws of the time, the family is forced to leave the city in 1940, and the young Emanuele sees his studies interrupted. The Luzzatis move to Switzerland, more precisely to Lausanne, a city where Emanuele begins to attend the School of Fine Arts (École des Beaux-Arts), finally obtaining his diploma. Once the war ended Emanuel and his family returned to Italy. As a set designer he did work for the London Festival Ballet, the Chicago Opera House, or the Vienna Staatsoper. He also collaborated as an illustrator for works by Italo Calvino and the Brothers Grimm, and was nominated for an Oscar in 1966 and 1974 for the animated shorts “La gazza ladra” and “Pulcinella” respectively, as animator and screenwriter. In 2001 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, at the initiative of the head of state. He passed away in his hometown on January 26, 2007, at the age of 85.
