In the foreground we find the young nobleman dressed in rich clothing looking at the viewer, quite possibly a private commission from the painter of a nobleman or rich Flemish merchant to portray his son in the manner of Saint John the Baptist. Juwes de Dowe (1608 – 1662) was a golden age painter from the Netherlands, very popular for his portraits from 1623 to 1661 in Flanders and with some of his works in the Rijksmuseum, work related: portrait of a young man nobleman with Saint John, Rijksmuseum, painted around 1647, accession number: 14886.
