In solid 18th century silver of a ship, called a “nef”, beautifully modeled as an ancient Roman bireme, highly detailed with movement. The galleon has two masts with gallery and crew on board and top, the hull supported by a crutch. Bireme is an ancient ship and a type of galley that was used by ancient maritime civilizations in the Mediterranean, especially the Phoenicians, ancient Greeks, and Romans. LaBirème takes its name from its two rows of oars, equipped with one man per oar. The first bireme was a development of the penteconter, an ancient warship with a single row of 25 oars on each side of Phoenician origin. The dominant warship in the Mediterranean during the 7th-4th centuries B.C. C., after which it was largely replaced by the larger quadriremes and quinqueremes. The jar is opened to reveal a container probably made to hold spices or table salt. These ships are placed in the center of the 16th century round table. The movement of the blades is activated by a crank in the shape of a human head located at the rear of the boat. The support that simulates water is shaped like waves and is a typical baroque style of the time. The entire boat is handmade in an artisan and archaic way. There are later models made at the beginning of the 20th century, inspired by the one we are presenting, but they implement less sophisticated manufacturing methods and with fewer details. The material used is solid solid silver. It has no visible markings. Very good condition. Dimensions: 63x55x33 cm These ships are placed in the center of the 16th century round table.
