Lote 158:
Oil on canvas: 120 x 85 cm, framed measurements: 150 x 120 cm. Cristóbal de Villalpando (Mexico City, c. 1649 – 1714) was one of the most famous painters of New Spain, whose work was produced at the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, coinciding temporarily with Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and partially with Manuel de Sumaya. Although there is no certainty, it can be inferred that the painter was born in Mexico around 1649, thanks to a document found in a book of Spanish admonitions belonging to the tabernacle of the cathedral of Mexico, dated 1669. Cristóbal de Villalpando was overseer of the painters’ guild between 1686 and 1699. In 1698 he was second lieutenant of the Halberdier Guard and promoted to captain in 1702. His death occurred in 1714, and he was buried in the church of San Agustín. Provenance: important private collection from Bilbao.
