Important Christmas Fine Art Auction: Haute Epoque, Jewels and Colonial Treasures
Lote 305:
Magnificent processional cross made of silver with extraordinary Levantine goldsmithing. The piece is worked and decorated on both sides since, being processional, its function was to be displayed on both sides; However, the main one differs by being more elaborate thematically and decoratively. The decorative aesthetic belongs to the late 16th-early 17th centuries. Decorative figures can be seen surrounded by quadrilobed cartouches; all of this topped by plant elements in the form of roléos and búcaros. In the back part you can see the representation of the tetramorphs, where an angel can be seen at the top, in relation to Saint Matthew; the lion with Saint Mark, the eagle with Saint John and the bull with Saint Luke. In the main part there is a Calvary in the central area, with the figure of Christ cut out and free, separated from the structure of the cross. The representation of his physiognomy corresponds to the abandonment of the medieval Crucified Christ and the implementation of classical realism in relation to the Renaissance. On the sides you can see the Sun and the Moon. Praying figures surround him on his sides. Height of the silver piece without base: 88cm.
