Oil on canvas. (Madrid, 1840-Cuenca, 1906). Spanish painter and illustrator. A student at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, he later continued his studies in Rome. From there he sent works to the National Fine Arts Exhibitions, being awarded in 1871 for the great historical canvas The Death of Seneca, his best-known painting. His work evolved, from the late-romantic Nazarene-inspired purism, to the decorativeism of its final stage, passing through Velazquez’s realism under the influence of Rosales. Painter of historical canvases, he also developed decorative cycles, among which the one carried out in the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande in Madrid, together with Alejandro Ferrant, stands out. From this experience, the Prado Museum keeps An episode from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, whose authors are Ferrant and Domínguez, and another work, with the same title, painted entirely by Domínguez. The Museum also guards a canvas inspired by a poem by Goethe, Margarita in front of the mirror.
