Joan Hernández Pijuan began his training at the Escola d’Arts i Oficis de la Llotja and the Escola de Belles Arts de Barcelona. In 1957 he moved to Paris, where he studied engraving and lithography at the École de Beaux-Arts. Although in his beginnings he was close to a gestural expressionism, he would soon adopt a geometric figuration dominated by fields of color and the presence of solitary objects such as fruits, cups, eggs or scissors. Color, treated with great elegance and mysticism, was always one of the protagonists of his work. On plain backgrounds and bands of gray and green colors, Hernández Pijuan incorporated mathematical elements and references such as grids or metric tapes. The stripes of colors, tonal gradation, transparencies, textures and light resonances are elements typical of the artist’s work, to which in the eighties he added forms such as the profile of a cypress tree, the furrows of a plow or the silhouette of a leaf, without ever abandoning abstraction. At the end of the eighties, Hernández Pijuan took up informalism again, developing a painting that ended up being characterized by the use of an exclusively black and white palette. With an atmospheric and austere work, the artist transforms painting into an exercise of spirituality and inner contemplation. His facet as an engraver also stands out, with a careful work of the weft and the serial element, also monochromatic.
