José de Páez (Mexico City, December 7, 1721 – c. 1780) was a New Spain painter of religious images of the 18th century. He is the son of Baltazar de Páez. He was a student of Nicolás Enríquez. He married Rosalía Caballero in 1753. He is known as a great artist of religious works with a marked preference for Marian invocations and one of the most prolific in New Spain. His biographer Manuel Touissaint went so far as to say that “José de Páez flooded the second half of the 18th century with his paintings.” His works achieved fame in New Spain (Mexico), the Viceroyalty of Peru and Spain. He followed the style of Miguel Cabrera. Provenance: private collection, Madrid. Reference bibliography: García Sáiz, María Concepción (1993-1994). «Mexican painting in Spain».
