Oil on canvas, without frame, measures: 67 x 57 cm. Mateo Pérez de Alesio (Lecce, 1547 – Lima, 1628) was an Italian-born painter and sculptor, active for almost his entire artistic career in Peru, where he lived for more than 40 years, between 1588 and 1628. He was the most important painter in Lima for a long time, and had a great influence on the local pictorial school even after his death. His production, of rigorous drawing and composition, shows a marked preference for large scenes with a slightly grandiose tone, a sign of his admiration for Michelangelo and other Mannerist painters. He specialized, above all, in religious-themed painting. Reference bibliography: Gabriela LAVARELLO DE VELAOCHAGA. Dictionary “Plastic Artists in Peru, XVI-XVII-XVIII-XIX-XX centuries” p. 314-315.
