Catalan school from the 19th century with frameless measurements 115 x 135cm. This work shows the rawest side of any war, in this case the author takes us to the Battle of Tetouan, framed in the African War, which extended from 1859 to 1860 and where we observe a charge between Spanish cavalry troops and Catalan recruits with their characteristic barretina in front of Berber horsemen. Francisco Sans i Cabot (Barcelona, 1828-Madrid, 1881). Spanish painter. He was director of the Prado Museum from 1873 to 1881. He began attending classes at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts as a silversmith’s apprentice, but finally decided to dedicate himself to painting. In 1856, to complete his training, he moved to Paris where he was under the tutelage of Thomas Couture. On May 5, 1881, Francisco Sans Cabot died, bequeathing to the Museum a painting titled Moroccan Blacksmith, which Mariano Fortuny had given him in 1866, after having painted his Fantasy of Faust (Prado, P2605) in the Madrid workshop of the director of the gallery.
