Oil on canvas. Unframed measurements: 127 x 77. Framed measurements: 164 x 113. Landscape views with meadows and a river. Over the river bridge, a shepherd, and sheep grazing on the grass. Signed. Carlos de Haes (Brussels, 1826 – Madrid, 1898), Spanish painter of Belgian origin, is one of the most prominent landscape painters of the 19th century. Winner in 1857 of the Landscape Chair at the Higher School of the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and awarded various medals in subsequent years, he managed to revalue the genre of landscapes in Spain. He advocated closely studying nature with long excursions outdoors to take sketches and notes, giving his paintings a much more realistic perspective than his predecessors did.
