Old Master Paintings & Spanish Colonial Art
Lot 160:
In gilded and polychrome wood. The sculptural piece that we study is about a child San Juan Bautista, commonly called San Juanito. His pose corresponds to the classic iconiography associated with Saint John, with the left arm raised in what would correspond to raising a rod or crozier and displaying a phylactery with the caption “Ecce Agnus Dei”; and with his right arm pointing to the lamb that lies at his feet looking for the Holy One with his gaze. “The carving of San Juan Bautista as a child reliably presents both the aesthetic features and the technical solutions of the Sevillian sculptor Juan Martínez Montañés, whose authorship we rigorously establish based on the comparative foundation offered by the works in his catalog, which are have exhaustively analyzed “: report made by Dr. José Carlos Pérez Morales is attached. Measurements: 65 x 40 cm. 83 x 40 cm with base.
