Stephaton is the name given in medieval Christian traditions to the Roman soldier, unnamed in the Bible, who offered Jesus a sponge soaked in wine and vinegar at the Crucifixion. In later depictions of the Crucifixion, Stephaton frequently appears with Longinus, the name given to the soldier who pierced Jesus’ side with a spear. Possibly forming part of an architectural element of a medieval church or cathedral. In carved stone, measurements: 42 cm high. Provenance: former Belgian private collection.
