Important Christmas Fine Art Auction: Haute Epoque, Jewels and Colonial Treasures
Lot 795:
Oil on canvas, measures: 168 x 100 cm. “By Mother of God you are also sinners, Virgin of Sorrows, do not deny us your favor”, with this beautiful prayer we present lot 449, a magnificent representation made by an anonymous Novohispano made between 1620 and 1640 of the invocation of the Virgen de la Soledad, whose devotion was brought to the New World by the order of the Servites. Her festival dates back to 1413, in Cologne, replacing the celebration of the Virgen del Pasmo -whose iconography sparked controversy when theologians saw her syncope or fainting as not in keeping with Mary- and thus counteracting the iconoclastic movement of the followers of John Huss. The cult and the festival spread throughout the Old Regime through Europe and Latin America. Origin: important old private family collection, southern Spain.
