The most prominent court painter of Isabel la Católica who remained carrying out her work in Castilian lands. Known as Juan de Flandes or Juan Flamenco since he arrived at the court of Castile in 1496, all attempts have been made to associate him with some of the Flemish painters, whose style is not known, called Juan like him, have been unsuccessful. And everything related to his formation is also ignored; However, thanks to the analysis of his works, it has been confirmed that, although he must have known the paintings of Hugo van der Goes. Before the end of the year 1509 he left for Palencia, where on December 19 he signed the contract to execute the paintings of the main altarpiece of the cathedral – to which The Crucifixion of the Prado belongs – and which he left unfinished at his death, although in the interim carried out other works that are attributed to him due to their stylistic characteristics, identical to those of the documented works, such as the main altarpiece of San Lázaro de Palencia, of which four panels have survived to us in the Prado [P2935-P2938] and another four in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, or the San Juan Bautista (National Archaeological Museum, Madrid), from Santa Clara de Palencia, foundation of the admirals of Castile.
