Colonial school, Peru, 18th century. Virgin of Popolo. Oil on canvas fixed to board. The Virgin of Santa María Mayor, also called the Virgin of the Snow, is a Byzantine icon dated between the 11th and 13th centuries that is preserved in the Basilica of Santa María la Mayor in Rome. Its origin was taken from the image known as the Hodigitria of the church of Hodegón, in Constantinople. The cult of the Virgen del Popolo was introduced by the Society of Jesus. San Francisco de Borja ordered four copies of the image for newly founded schools in America. Reference bibliography. Manuel Trens: “María. Iconography of the Virgin in Spanish art”.
