Oil on canvas. Canvas measures 70 x 52 cm, framed measures: 102 x 81 cm. Reinhard Sebastian Zimmermann (1815 – 1893) was a German artist who studied at the Munich Academy under Julius Schnorr, Heinrich Maria von Hess, and Clemens von Zimmermann. Initially active as a portrait painter, he was appointed Royal Painter to the Grand Duke of Baden and devoted himself to depicting Bavarian and Swabian peasant life. He repainted the same subject several times as the painting “Zahlungsschwierigkeiten” (Payment Difficulties) the first version dates from 1852, the last from 1855. His paintings are on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, between b other museums.
